Abraham Janssens also known as Abraham Janssens Van Nuyssen, was a pupil of the painter and collector Jan Snellinck. In 1589 it is documented in Rome as well as in 1602 and 1610.

His painting reveals the teachings of Rubens and demonstrates features of the Nordic Mannerist tradition then enriched around 1610 by dramatic lighting to the vigorous modeling of Caravaggio and the Roman Baroque school.

Our “Circe” or “Zingara” is placed between the second and third decade, still intrinsic to the refined Nordic Mannerist experiences and the Caravaggesque maturation in the light.

Circe o Zingara

Abraham Janssens detto anche Abraham Janssens Van Nuyssen, è stato allievo del pittore e collezionista Jan Snellinck. Nel 1589 è documentato a Roma cosi come nel 1602 e 1610.

La sua pittura rivela gli insegnamenti di Rubens e dimostra  caratteristiche della tradizione manierista nordica arricchita poi verso il 1610 dall’illuminazione drammatica alla vigorosa modellazione di Caravaggio e della scuola romana barocca.

La nostra “Circe” o “Zingara”  si colloca tra il secondo e il terzo decennio, ancora intrinseca dalle  raffinate esperienze manieriste nordiche e la maturazione caravaggesca negli chiari scuri. Bellissima è la natura morta sul tavolo che rivela un suggestivo realismo.
