Note:

Antoine Coypel was the son of the painter Noèl Coypel from whom he learned to paint and to learn the secrets of the art of painting. He followed his father on his trip to Rome and stayed there for four years where he completed his training through the study of Baroque painting, in particular the Roman one. He returned to Paris and became a member of the "Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture" and in 1714 he was appointed Director and received the title of "First Painter of the King".

Surely it is a variant of the version of his own work that is in the Louvre, confirming some regrets of the putti's feet (the putto holding the fluttering cloth and the one next to it).

A repentance in art is a rethinking in the course of work, which an artist implements by correcting a detail by masking it with veils that reappear over time.

Repentances are usually a sign of a guarantee that the artist was not copying.

The figure of Galatea in our work is similar in anatomy and movements to the Venus in a drawing by Coypel which is located at the National Gallery in Washington.

Note:

Antoine Coypel fu figlio del pittore Noèl Coypel dal quale imparò a dipingere e ad  apprendere i segreti dell’arte pittorica. Seguì suo padre nel viaggio a Roma e vi soggiornò per quattro anni dove  attraverso lo studio della pittura barocca in modo particolare quella romana completò la sua formazione. Tornato a Parigi e divenne membro dell’”Accademia Reale di Pittura e Scultura” e nel 1714 fu nominato Direttore e ricevette il titolo di “primo Pittore del Re”.

Sicuramente si tratta di una variante della versione della sua stessa opera che si trova al Louvre, a conferma alcuni pentimenti dei piedini dei puttini  (il putto che tiene il drappo svolazzante e quello affianco) .

Un pentimento in arte, è un ripensamento in corso d’opera, che un artista mette in atto correggendo un particolare  mascherandolo con velature che con il tempo riaffiorano.

Solitamente i pentimenti sono segno di garanzia che l’artista non stava copiando.

La figura di Galatea della nostra opera è similare nell’anatomia e nelle movenze,  alla Venere di un disegno di Coypel che si trova alla National Gallery di Washington.
